One of Tyneside's most established acts played a sold out gig at Hexham's Queens Hall on Saturday for an evening of non-stop rhythm and blues. The Junco Partners, now a seven piece, were formed back in 1964 and have appeared alongside some of the most famous names in music including Little Richard, Deep Purple and Slade. Although they split in 1971, they were back in 1977 and have tasted more success since then with both radio and television appearances. The venue was comfortable It was my first time at a gig at the Queens Hall, and I was impressed by the comfortable surroundings and relaxed manner, and above all I managed to spy a well-placed seat next to the bar! The place was just about full by the time I got there and this emphasises just how popular the Junco Partners are in the region (and probably a lot further afield too). At around 8.30pm the band came on stage to much applause and the comedy act between the two vocalists Ronnie Barker and John Anderson started immediately and would carry on for the rest of the night. The band plays an excellent set of real rhythm and blues and it was their version of BB King's 'When It All Comes Down' that really set the standard for the rest of the night. Great music roused the dancers More great music followed including a rousing rendition of 'Cocaine' and 'Blue Monday', all of which received a great response from the faithful audience. A special mention must go to Justin Radford on saxophone who was an absolute joy to listen to and provided some audience interaction as he moved amongst the crowd during 'Bring It On Home'. It was only a matter of time before the dancing started, and although there wasn't much room to manoeuvre, 'My Girl' got some people on their feet. A few more brave souls were up by the time the band launched into the great 'Knock on wood' and by this time the Junco Partners couldn't put a foot wrong. 'Encore' shouts were obliged The group had hardly had time to leave the stage before the shouts for an encore could be heard, and the band obliged with 'Mustang Sally' which went down a treat. Overall, this was an excellent night's entertainment with some great music, amusing banter and some brilliant playing from the whole band. The Junco Partners have a strong following already but I'm sure they are acquiring new fans with every performance. What certainly shows is that the band still loves playing as much today as they did when they started nearly 40 years ago.
